Reviews

Aylin Sedighi Gabbaizadeh has written a beautiful book about Jewish girls and women living in Iran in the 1930’s. Under the Persimmon Tree is a story of love, sacrifice and sisterhood that is that rare thing – a book that transports you to different world but makes you feel as if you know it as well as you know the contours of your own heart and face. This is a story to be gobbled up and then savored. "

From the very first page, one is transformed to different time, through the fragrant aroma of the spices and colors of the bazaars; and can nearly taste the warm, soft stone bread freshly baked, filling the tiny passageways.

At eleven years old, Goli dreams of playing freely with her brothers, not being confined to the expectations of how proper girls should behave. Jasmine also eleven, lives with the shame and embarrassment of her father, whose erratic and angry actions sends her and sisters hiding for a safe place.
